Wireless router setup

Wireless router setup at home or small office network:

My name is Jim and I will tell you how to setup and troubleshoot wired or wireless network at home. I was working as a Senior Technical Support Executive for more than 5 years.

I was taking calls and fixing network related issues over the phone. I have troubleshooted almost all the routers like Linksys, Netgear, D-link and others too. I have answered thousands of calls and resolved more than 98% issues.

Now, let’s talk about your router setup with Cable or DSL Internet service provider.

Do you want to know what is router, why do you need it, what is firmware and how does it work? I am not going to tell you technical specification of each router. I will simply tell you how to install it and fix it.

Easy steps to setup your wireless router at home.

Step 1: If you are installing your router for the first time or if you want to reconfigure the entire network then I will suggest you to reset the router first.

Step 2: Check the Internet connection through the modem.

Connect your main computer directly to the modem and make sure that Internet is working through the modem. If your main computer is not able to access the Internet through the modem then I think you should first contact the Internet service provider. When I used to take calls, more than 30% users were not able to access the Internet through the modem. They had to call the Internet service provider. Before you blame your router, make sure that culprit is not modem.

Step 3: Make proper connections to the router.

Connect the modem to the Internet port and computer to one of the Ethernet ports on the router. Generally, there are 4 Ethernet ports on the router which are together and Internet port would be standing alone. If you connect your computer to the Internet port instead of Ethernet port, it is not going to work. Because your computer will not get IP address and it will not communicate with the router.

How to connect computer and modem to the router

How to connect computer and modem to the router

I have fixed many calls just by making proper connections only.

Step 4: Open the setup page of the router.

Each and every router has a web based Interface where you can change the settings manually. I am talking about routers that are used for home or small office networks only.

Router is a device which will assign IP addresses to all the computers and devices connected to the network. Router also needs IP address to communicate with other devices. So there is a default IP address of the router.

For example, the default IP address of Linksys router is 192.168.1.1, Netgear has 192.168.0.1. This IP address may change according to the model or the brand. You need to find the IP address of the computer and router.

Open the command prompt and in the command prompt type ipconfig . Hit enter on the keyboard. You will see the default gateway number. Note is down. This default gateway is the number that you are looking for. Read more…

Linksys EA4500 router review

EA4500 is App Enabled N900 Dual-Band Wireless Router with Gigabit Ethernet port.

The Linksys EA4500 has transfer rates of up to 450 + 450 Mbps to connect your devices at ultra fast speed.

Why am I writing this review?

This is not my own review but this is the collection of reviews what I saw on different websites like amazon.com, cnet.com and other websites.

So that you don’t need to go to all the sites and check reviews on all the sites before buying your product. This is to save your time.

After reading more than 200 reviews on different sites, I have found that Linksys EA4500 wireless router is worth to buy.

If you read all the negative reviews about this router, you will find that these negative reviews are not because of performance of the router but it is because of the firmware update of this model.

Cisco tried to update Cisco connect software to Cisco connect cloud and this is where they started getting negative reviews for this router.

I have gone through 200 reviews.

Out of which

5-STAR    = 88

4-STAR   = 24

3 STAR   =  20

2-STAR  = 10

1-STAR  = 48

So if you calculate, more than 60% customers are happy with Linksys EA4500 router.

And unhappy customer are just because of Firmware update or Cisco connect cloud update.

Cisco has also provided solution link to roll back this firmware update. So it is possible that all the unhappy customers are now happy after rolling back the update.

You definitely need this book which we are going to gift you once you purchase any wireless router from AMAZON.COM through this link. After you buy your router, contact us with your purchase details.

Now let me tell you more about Linksys EA4500 review.

Pros Features the EA series’ excellent Cisco Connect setup software. Dual-band. Very good throughput at both bands. USB for connecting storage and printers.

Cons Expensive. Does not offer much performance advantage over similar and lower-priced dual-bands on the market.

Bottom Line The EA4500 is the update to the Linksys E4200 v2, designed to work with new upcoming router software from Cisco. Performance-wise it’s on par as the E4200 v2, but for a chunk more change.

Here is a Positive review which gives you comparison between Linksys EA4500 and DIR-655.
This is a review from amazon.com

SPEED/THROUGHPUT – Per either the router app’s built in speed tester (very cool, as is the automatic firmware upgrade option, if desired) or speedtest.net, I went from something like and average of 25 over 10 Mbps to 43 over 25 Mpbs. Finally, efficient use of my advertised Verizon FiOS connection!

RANGE – So far so good. Also, that cursed (just in terms of set up) Foscam webacam is showing a much better video feed both in the house and via remote view on port forwarding. That was an unexpected bonus.

SOFTWARE – Cisco/Linksys are definitely trying to make it an easy/pleasant experience to manage the router, but I (and I’m sure many others who would use a piece of kit like this) won’t to go beyond the glossy top level management app. So I was pleased to see that I could indeed jump over to a much more detailed device management interface, much like you’d see with the DIR-655 or other routers. I’m still getting used to the different menus, but it looks like just about everything is there. I’m having a hard time finding the status/MAC address/etc. of all connected devices (such that I had to use a separate IP sniffer when setting up the webcam) but I have to believe it’s there somewhere!

Here is a negative review from amazon.com.

This negative review is just because of firmware update and you will find many negative reviews for this update.

I have had this router now for quite a while and it was working flawlessly, I had it set up exactly how I wanted it. I absolutely LOVED this router.
Unfortunately this all changed on 6/26/2012 when Cisco took it upon themselves to basically FORCE an install of their new firmware which enables their Cisco Cloud Connect service. My device was set to not do updates automatically and yet the router became inactive and after a reboot it received this new firmware update from Cisco without my acknowledgement. This service makes you log into an external server to access your routers settings. There was no option given by Cisco to either use or not use the Cloud, and we were not notified that this firmware update was going to be installed without our knowledge or desire for that matter.
The new firmware apparently can be removed if you call Cisco technical support, but they will advise you that the firmware on your router is no longer supported (the router is only 3 months old, so basically they trashed the original software and wont support you if you use it).
The new firmware is very buggy and reports my internet connection is down when it clearly isn’t. You no longer have direct access to your router even from within your own network. I believe this to be a security risk potential.

Cisco connect cloud for Linksys router setup

Cisco connect cloud allows you to access all of your router’s features and settings from anywhere that means you can access your Linksys router setup page from anywhere on the Internet. One of the greatest benefits of Cisco Connect Cloud is being able to access your home network settings and activities when you’re not home. Simply open a web browser, go to CiscoConnectCloud.com and log into your Cisco Connect Cloud account. All of your home router settings are available to you no matter where you are.

You must create a personal account that gives you access to your home router settings. This account ensures secure access to your router, even when you’re away from home. This account is created only to verify that it is your router and you have the access to your router.

The Cisco Connect Cloud is compatible with Linksys Smart Wi-Fi routers (EA2700, EA3500, EA4500) and the Linksys E4200 v2. This service allows you to access your router, configure and check your home network instantly from wherever you are.

What is the difference between Cisco connect and Cisco connect cloud?

The Cisco Connect application installs on a computer connected to your home network, and home network settings can be accessed only while using that computer. Cisco Connect Cloud runs on the web and you can access Linksys router setup from any web browser, using a secure login account. So you can be on your home computer, your mobile phone on-the-go, or even at work, and access your home router settings and activity using Cisco Connect Cloud. Read more…

Linksys router setup in just $9

There are many websites which will give you tons of information about Linksys router setup and networking. But do you really think you need that much information to fix your router?

Do you know?

Your router or any other device has Free technical support only for a limited period of time. If your device is out of free technical support period, then you have to pay for the support. The price of a one time technical support can be more than $30 or $40.

You just need few simple steps to get your router up and running immediately.

I was working as a Technical support executive and I have answered thousands of calls in last 5 years.

What is my observation?

More than 90% will call tech-support for help after a long search on the Internet. And they will be ready to pay $30 or $40 for the support.

As I said, you will get all types of information about Linksys router setup on the Internet but not the actual solution. You will keep on searching and experimenting on your Linksys router.

The setup is easy but if you make a single mistake, you will not be able to access Internet through the router. Read more…

192.168.1.1 how to open Linksys router setup

192.168.1.1 is the default IP address of almost all the models of Linksys router and this number is usually used to open the Linksys router setup page.

My name is Jim and I would like to share some networking information with you. I was working as a Senior technical support Executive for more than 5 years. I have used this number thousand times and I really like this number.

You can open the setup page of the router using 192.168.1.1. The setup page is the page where you will find all the settings of your network.

It is not necessary that all the models of Linksys router will use 192.168.1.1 as default IP address. let’s take an example of WCG200. It is a cable gateway and the number for the model is 192.168.0.1.

I will suggest you to check the IP address of your computer and the router. Sometimes it also happens that installation software of your router will change the router IP address.

Let’s consider that you are using a DSL Internet service and also the modem provided by ISP. Some DSL modems use 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254 as a default IP address. Now you can not connect Linksys router with the same number. When you run the installation program to setup your router, it will change the router IP address automatically to 192.168.0.1. Read more…
