“I was working as a Senior technical support Engineer for more than 5 years and I have troubleshooted almost all the models of Linksys router and manual linksys router setup is easy. I used to answer around 20 tech-support calls in a day. Linksys is one of the leading router manufacturing company which is now a part of Cisco.”

It also has a USB port where you can connect Network storage device and share it within the network. Guest access and Parental control are good features of Linksys E4200.
I will explain you few important steps of linksys router setup process. If you want, you can skip the explanation and start installing your Linksys E4200 router by clicking on this link.
Linksys E4200 router setup
Here is the standard procedure of Linksys router setup. Like other Linksys routers, you can setup Linksys E4200 router without using installation software. This device also has default IP address and web based configuration page. Default IP address of Linksys E4200 router is 192.168.1.1 and the default password is admin, leave the user name blank.
Step 1: Check the Active Internet connection through the modem.
Connect your main computer directly to the modem using Ethernet cable and try to access Internet. Your main computer should be able to access Internet when connected directly to the modem. If you are not able to go online with the modem the I will suggest you to call your ISP and get the Internet working on the modem first.
Step 2: Make proper connections.
Connect the modem to the Internet port. Connect the main computer to Ethernet port 1. You will see 4 Ethernet ports on the router. You need to connect your computer to one of them. You will see 4 lights, power, Internet, Ethernet and wireless.
I have fixed many tech-support calls just by making proper connections. If you connect your computer to the Internet port and modem to the Ethernet port then it is not going to work. I have seen many people doing wrong connections. Check the connections in the image below.
Step 3: Open the setup page.
Open Internet browser and in the address bar type 192.168.1.1. Hit go and it will ask you for user name and password. The default password is admin, leave the user name blank. It will open the Linksys router setup page. If the default password is not working then you will need to reset the router to factory default settings. Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds. Release the reset button and power cycle the router. Now try the default password again.
Step 4: Change Internet connection settings.
This is very important step of configuration. If you make mistake here, your router will not be able to communicate with the modem.
For Cable ISP, you need to clone the MAC address of the main computer.
For DSL ISP, you need to change the PPPoE settings or you may need to change the router IP address.
Step 5: Create a wireless network.
Once you change the Internet connection settings successfully, your main computer will be able to go online with the wired network. Now you can create a Wi-Fi connection for other devices.
Change the wireless network name SSID. Do not use default SSID. Enable wireless security mode and use a strong password. Do not share your security key with anybody. There are different ways to secure your wireless network but I will suggest you not to follow all the security methods. That will be just a wastage of time and it will make it more complicated. You can simply change the SSID and enable WPA or WPA2 security.
Step 6: Connect all the devices to the network.
If you have a wired computer, just connect Ethernet cable between wired computer and one of the Ethernet ports on the router.
If you have a wireless computer or devices, you need to search for the WiFi and connect to it. The security key is case sensitive, so enter it carefully.
You can allow your guests to use guest access. By using Guest access they will be able to access only Internet and not your computers.
Linksys E4200 router setup using Cisco connect software.
Let me tell you what is Cisco connect software?
Cisco connect software is used for initial installation of your Linksys E4200 router. You can also manage Guest access settings and Parental control settings using Cisco connect software.
Like E1000, E2000, E3000 routers, it is not necessary to install Cisco connect software to use Guest access. You can use Guest access without installing this software.
Step 1: Connect your main computer to the modem and check Internet connection through modem. Make sure that your computer is able to go online through the modem.
Step 2: Connect the modem to the Internet port and computer to Ethernet port. Cisco connect software will not ask you to connect computer with the Ethernet cable. You can install it using wireless computer also. But it will be better to connect withe Ethernet cable otherwise you will get many errors. This is what my observation is.
Step 3: Run the installation CD on your main computer. The software will start setting up your router automatically. You don’t need to do anything. All the settings will be done by the software itself. If it is DSL ISP then it will ask you to enter PPPoE user name and password.
At the end, you will get a message of successful installation. You will be able to see the user name and password of your network. The router password is the password of your wireless network also. You can change the SSID and password using Cisco connect software. Also manage guest network settings. Only 10 guests can connect at the same time. You can disable guest access or you can change the number of guest users also.

Download the correct firmware file from the Internet. Make sure that you are selecting the correct model and version number of your device. You will find the correct model and version number is located on the flip side of your device. Save the file on your main computer.
Connect your computer with the Ethernet cable. Never use wireless computer to upgrade firmware.
Open the setup page of the router. Go to Administration tab. Click on firmware upgrade sub tab. Select the firmware file that you have downloaded and click start upgrade.
At the end you will get the message of successful upgrade. If it fails then you make sure that all the firewalls on your computer are disabled. You have downloaded correct file. Reset the router and try it again.
